| TextDE | On August 19th, 1942, auxiliary transport LAKATOI, commissioned at Nouméa, New Caledonia on 15 August and manned by a crew made up of survivors of the sunken transport GEORGE F. ELLIOTT (AP-13) departed Noumea for Fila Harbor, Efate with a cargo of flour, sugar, and canned goods. Not stable enough to withstand a storm, on August 21st, LAKATOI started tilting heavily in heavy weather and capsized. She sank in 2 minutes, but the crew was well prepared to abandon ship. The crew of 29 went for the only rubber life raft and on September 2nd, they landed at Passe d’Amos, about five miles east of Pam Head, on the northeastern coast of New Caledonia, One crew was lost due to exposure.
