TextEN | The conditions of the Versailles Treaty after WW I put restrictions on Reichsmarine building new heavy units. Despite restrictions concerning displacement of the ships (max. 10,000 tons), German engineers succeded to develop the so-called Panzerschiff A ("pocket battleship") "Deutschland", Panzerschiff B "Admiral Scheer" and Panzerschiff C "Admiral Graf Spee", which were brilliant and trend-setting designs. When, with the Munich Fleet Accord (1935) the building restrictions were eased up decisively, soon there were calls to enhance the combat efficiency of the "pocket battleships". So, the concepts for Panzerschiff D and Panzerschiff E were developed, which were to have a heavier secondary armament. The Panzerschiff "E" (Gneisenau or Schlieffen) was to get four 15cm twin turrets, which were to be placed laterally at the main deck, five 10,5 cm gun twin gun pods and a modified bridge structure (in difference to "Admiral Graf Spee's"). Furthermore, the stepping of the rear deck was to be eliminated, which would have resulted in an even elevation of the deck from bow to stern. An exection of the construction of these two "pocket battleships" as per "Plan Z" was not conducted, but it is said the design was a base for the battleships "Gneisenau" and "Scharnhorst".(255) Kit: Resin conversion for a marine project of the German Navy, the Panzerschiff "E" scale 1/700 by Bird Models (2014). This conversion kit consist of 16 resin parts, like waterline resin hull without stepping of the rear deck, complete lower bridge with data center and battle-mast, 4x 15cm twin gun turrets, 1 x 10,5cm twin AA gun turret, 1 platform for battle-mast, complete funnel with platform and all needed turned brass parts: 8 x 15cm and 2 x 10,5cm guns. The conversion kit is based on the basic kit "Admiral Graf Spee 1937" scale 1/700 by Trumpeter. | |
